Just did a Story Cards Adventure with my kids, aged 10 and 12. The mood was supposed to be comedic, but as you will be able to see, it got pretty whimsical.
The genre draw was Costumed Heroes, Robots, and Holiday and we used all three. (Actually this was the second draw. Our first draw was Costumed Heroes, Lost World, and Conspiracy but that sounded too dark for a comedic adventure, but we all liked Costumed Heroes, so we dropped two and drew two more.) Emma (12) made a superhero called The Fat Lady who had a sonic attack and a spear and magic helmet. Not kidding. Since her curse in her character card spread was "Tragedy" Emma decided that she must be very dramatic in everything she did. She had a weakness in that she couldn't fit through most doors. Simon's (10) character was named Breakout who was very very very strong and could break things, but he had to be eating constantly because of his high metabolism. He also had a sidekick named Electroboy who could stun things and repair things and, apparently, say "gee whilicker!" a lot. Scene breakdown was such: Prologue: Our three heroes are invited to be the grand marshals in the New Harmony City Holiday City Parade. Scene 1: Ninja Robot Leprechauns with Shamrock Shurikens attack the reviewing stand and attempt to abduct the mayor, Peter Kringle. They tie him up to a giant turkey balloon and start to take off with him. Breakout and the Fat Lady were unable to stop this, but the Fat Lady managed to puncture a hole in the balloon and Breakout managed to climb on board. The leprechauns and their kidnapped mayor were rescued by a rocket sleigh with two reindeer pilots. Breakout was subdued by the hypnotic red glow of the reindeer pilots' noses. Electroboy and the Fat Lady make chase in a dreidel helicopter they commandeered. Scene 2: Breakout is taken to Holiday Island and is imprisoned in shackles and given no food. He becomes weak and docile. Electroboy and the Fat Lady speed to the island and are attacked by waves of cupids, but they are able to stave off their attack. The Holiday Maker meets them out on the landing pad with the shackled Breakout in tow. The Holiday Maker reveals that he is, in fact, Peter Kringle the Mayor and has staged all this to distract the heroes from his true plot, to remake New Harmony City as he wants, into a great holiday themed mecca. To get rid of the urban blight he has sent his 100 foot Easter Bunny to lay waste to parts of the city. While he was monologuing Electroboy manages to slip Breakout a cheeseburger and he breaks out of his shackles. The Fat Lady sings. Holiday Maker is captured in spite of the legions of pumpkin bomb laden raven minions. They head back to the city in the dreidel helicopter. Scene 3: The Easter Bunny is found, ears protruding over the city skyline, as he tosses his Easter Egg bombs hither and yon bellowing, "Hippity Hoppity, Hippity Hoppity." The Fat Lady managed to blind the robotic menace with her spear and Breakout landed on the head and busted his way into the control room where he tossed out the rabbit crew. The city is saved. Yes, we are very silly. The whole thing took a little more than 3 hours, start to finish, even with Emma trying to figure out character creation. We probably spent a good hour just getting the characters right and giving me some time to plot out the adventure. The handbook was very well laid out and very helpful. On the whole a very enjoyable experience. I think I need to brush up on my feat adjudication as a guide as I was playing it a bit fast and loose. It was fine for our silly adventure, but I'm not sure it would fly for something more epic and serious.
